On July 13th, 14th, 17th, and 18th , Susanna Huang from the East Cobb Branch participated in the English Tutoring Program and tutored for two hours on each of the days (in total of 8 hours).
This program’s goal is to provide English guidance to the elderly who do not know much English. Volunteers are needed for 1 on 1 tutoring sessions. By helping these elderly improve their English, the goal is to make communication smoother and life easier for them.
My student wanted to improve her English pronunciation. Each day we would have a routine where she would say “Good morning!” and the day of the week as well as the full date on Zoom. Then we would go through the alphabet, and I would sometimes test her on how to spell specific words. Then we would go through the numbers, from the ones to the hundred to the thousands to the billions. Next, we would play a little game where I would type a number on the screen on Zoom, and she would have to say the number in English and in Chinese. I would sometimes type the number or type the word form of the number, and she has to differentiate between the two different types of numbers. For example one and first, five and fifth, thirty and thirtieth. I would also say some numbers in Chinese, and she would have to say the English equivalent. After reviewing for a while, she would easily catch on.
I feel that what made my teaching experience easier was that I understood my student’s native language. Since I could teach her English with her native language, the pronunciation was much more understandable and easy to comprehend for her. I feel that our communication in her native language also expedited her learning process. She enjoys learning as much as I enjoy teaching, so I’m glad that I was assigned to this particular student. She has improved much over the last two months. I will probably continue tutoring her.
