On June 13, 2020, the AYLUS proudly hosted its first national virtual seminar with guest speaker Kenneth Yan, an AYLUS Alumni and a rising sophomore at Yale University intending to major in Computer Science and History.
During his high school years, Kenneth was a captain of his high school’s FIRST Tech Challenge robotics team, where he worked on computer-aided design, team management, fundraising, and community outreach.
He continues to be an active volunteer and mentor within the FIRST community. Beginning in early April, Kenneth has been a member of SOMA NJ 3D Printers Alliance, a coalition of volunteers in the state of New Jersey 3D printing personal protective equipment (PPE) items for frontline workers to combat the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
By applying the skills he learned on his robotics team, Kenneth has helped SOMA NJ 3D Printers Alliance deliver over 30,000 face shields and 10,000 ear savers to first responders and healthcare workers in New Jersey and surrounding areas.
During the seminar, Kenneth Yan shared his highschool volunteer activities and college application experience with a PPT presentation. He also tried to answer the following questions:
- How did you balance your academic and volunteer activities over the high school years?
- What are some key life lessons you’ve throughout volunteering?
- Why do you think volunteering is so important?
- What is college life like?
- What kind of volunteering activities did you organize and take part in?
- Do you plan on continuing to volunteer throughout college? If so, how will you do so?
- Were there any skills you improved through volunteering? i.e. interpersonal skills, public speaking, management.
- As a leader, how did you motivate others to lend a hand?
- 30K face shield, that is amazing, how did you get funds to support 30K face shield materials?
- We are working on a 3D print project. Any good learning to share?
70+ students from 20+ branches across the country attended the seminar and appreciated Kenneth’s sharing very much. You can reach Kenneth for questions at:
