Greater Princeton AYLUS (GPA) “Community Service” team worked as camp counselors at the Church in Hamilton, NJ on August 19 and 20, 2019.
This summer camp is designed for children from K to 6th grade. It was a great opportunity for GPA volunteers to work with younger kids and teach them how to be good people. It was also a way to interact with the campers and make new friends.
In the morning, they signed in and attended a short meeting with the rest of the TA’s. The meeting was a place where they could share their ideas with others about how to take care of the kids and where they could share their feedback with the head teachers so that they could know how the camp was going. After the short meeting, they headed into the main classroom where the campers would be gathering to prepare for singing. Once the majority of the students arrived, they started to sing the camp songs and several other songs and hymns. After the singing, everyone had a quick snack and the official lessons started. The lessons were about famous stories and good character traits that the people in the stories expressed and how they should use those traits in their daily lives.
In the afternoon, there was a corporate lesson and group time. The younger kids made crafts and the older kids practiced for their short skit. Once this was over, the campers went to do indoor and outdoor activities before dismissal. For the entire day, Xiangcheng and Amber were busy assisting campers with fun activities, including teaching campers to make sushi for lunch. It was a great way to help out the community and learn to be a great example for others.
