Reported by Cassie Tammy Wang
Greater Princeton AYLUS (GPA) “Earth Team” Volunteers, Joyce Li and Cassie Tammy Wang, worked at the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), an agency of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) on August 2, 2019, from 8 am to 5 pm (9 hours).
GPA members Joyce Li and Cassie Tammy Wang were invited to join Richard Shaw, State Soil Scientist of NRCS as well as Edwin Muñiz, Assistant State Soil Scientist, and a college student volunteer with a soil assessment at Orange County, NJ. They tested the soil for high concentrations of mainly lead and arsenic. The two Earth Team Volunteers were taught how to use some of the instruments to record data including an XRF GPS. They were also in charge with the photography of this Soil Assessment.
The work of GPA Earth Team Volunteers will allow NRCS to stretch available resources and plus additional conservation practices on the ground. Their work is considered important, because it improves NRCS customer service and the environment for all.
