On May 24th, 2025, 9am to 12:30pm, our team hosted our 159th event at Bowne Playground from 9am to 12pm. Our team partnered with Maureen Regan in order to beautify Bowne Playground. Maureen Regan is a community advocate, fostering youth education for environmental justice, health and Wellness, climate change with a focus on a sustainable urban space. She sits on many local boards, VP of Operations at Queens Historical Society, Co Chair of Olde Towne of Flushing Burial Ground Conservancy, President of Queensboro Hill Flushing Civic, Voelker Orth Museum and on the CAB of NY Presbyterian Hosp Queens and Queens College. She created Green Earth Urban Gardens in 2011 to address local green spaces and food justice in the community. She also is a board member of Community Board 7, which serves all of Northeast Queens.
Today’s event is in celebration of Mental Health Awareness month, where this is letting everyone out to enjoy the fresh air to help relax their mind, and Asian American and Pacific Islander Month, where cleaning the playground will allow the AAPI elderly that visit the park every day to enjoy their time more at the playground.
During today’s event, our volunteers were split into three different groups. One group of elementary schoolers for trash clean up, a group of 10 high schoolers for mulching, and the rest divide into two groups for weeding two garden beds. The elementary schoolers had a few people carrying trash bags and a few carrying garbage pickers, going around the park to collect all the garbage that they saw into the bags. When they noticed that there was some garbage inside the garden beds, they would go into the beds in order to collect all the garbage such as plastic bags, chip bags, and more. The group of highschoolers will use shovels and two wheelbarrows in order to transport the mulch into the garden bed that is in front of the restroom and facing the street. From there, there will be a few more highschoolers, who are holding rakes, spreading the mulch out as evenly as possible, around a few inches. This way, the weeds will be killed and provide the trees with some more moisture. With our volunteers that were weeding, they were separated into two different groups for two different garden beds. Each group uses shovels to get rid of the weeds with bigger roots or bigger weeds, trowels for smaller weeds, and plastic bags to collect all the weeds. Our team worked together in order to clean up the playground and make the playground better than when we first arrived.
We would like to thank Maureen for all her hard work and dedication to the community, as well as going out of her way to provide us with snacks for more energy during the event. We would also like to thank the Parks workers like Ada for providing us with tools during the event and our members for all their hard work. We look forward to continuing to work with Maureen.
