On April 19th from 8:30 to 1:00pm, AYLUS volunteers went to the Nassau Community College to help with the 2025 International Wushu Championships. Initially when volunteers arrived they were given a badge, a shirt and located in their own respective spots. The venue was quite large, so there were many jobs for volunteers to take. In the morning volunteers ushered athletes, coaches, and families in, handing out their “Athlete” badges and a booklet containing the schedule for the day’s events. After around 9:30 am the event started.
Wushu can be defined as Chinese Martial Arts, and various groups from around the world have begun to showcase their acts. These include choreographed dances, fights and kung fu.
Each routine would be scored by a panel of judges, and AYLUS volunteers would average the scores and record it digitally on a sheet. They were in charge of processing the scores and confirming what times athletes would be participating in routines. Additionally some volunteers were set up by the information desk/gift shop, where they would handle the money and package gifts.
After 12:30 pm, there was a quick lunch break, and volunteers were offered bottles of water and bento boxes containing chicken, beef and shrimp.
Overall with the help of AYLUS volunteers they were able to make the championship run smoothly and benefited everyone who went. From helping keep track of scores, to managing the front desk the volunteers were a crucial part in the 2025 Wushu Championships success.
