On Tuesday April 15th 2025, from 9am – 1pm, members from the AYLUS roslyn branch volunteered at NOSH delivers!, a nonprofit organization that provides free meals to local families in need.
When we arrived, we checked in with the staff and got to work. We all split up into different stations, helping the staff that were already there. 1 volunteer worked in the back, picking out fresh vegetables and fruits, then washing them. These fruits and vegetables were then moved to the station where they were being bagged and passed out, where 2 other volunteers were stationed. Here they also stored bread and freezed produce such as milk, yogurt, etc. The last volunteer was put at the central area, where they helped to guide the families and pass out general foods such as canned soup, spaghetti, beans, cereal, etc. Some work that was collectively done was transporting the foods from the back into the central area where families could select what they wanted to bring home, as well as moving foods in bulk on grocery carts for outdoor deliveries.
Something we didn’t expect was how tedious the work can be. Teamwork was essential as we had to watch the children there, keep track of how many items a family can take, heavy lifting, etc. Though these were some things we might have struggled with, we persevered and got through the day, ensuring everyone left with a smile on their faces.
Volunteering at nosh showed us what a difference we could make in other people’s lives, just by giving back to the community by passing out food to them. It also taught us that working as a team can help us accomplish greater things.
