20190525 East Cobb Branch ‘Give A Hand’ Summer Event II — Summer Reading Kickoff Party

On May 25th, 9 members of the East Cobb Branch volunteer 4 hours at the Cobb County Public Library Summer Reading Kickoff Party.

The program’s goal is to encourage younger children to read throughout the summer. The kickoff party was located at the East Cobb Civic Center, and the entire building was set up with all different kinds of science-related stations and activities, such as arts and crafts, obstacle courses, and storytelling.

Our members participated by supervising different stations or activities. The goal was to attract kids to come to their station, and teach them what the station was about, how the station worked, as well as interact with the kid(s) while they were there. For example, after seeing a kid show interest in their station, a volunteer might ask the kid if he/she wanted to give their station a try. The volunteer would then proceed to explain how the station worked, and assist the kid or give words of encouragement throughout his/her time at the station. Finally, members helped to wrap up all the stuff and move the tables and chairs back.

This event was an interesting way to push the idea of summer reading to younger children. The different space-related activities and stations sparked the interest of the children, and as a result, they will want to read more about space during the summer on their own accord.

Attendance: Michael Fu (4 hours), Jeffrey Kuang (4 hours), Brian Kuang (4 hours), David Qu (4 hours), Stanley Lu (4 hours), Jack Xu (2 hours), Cynthia Ruan (2 hours), Faith Huang (2 hours), Diane Chen (2 hours)
