On Saturday, March 8th, AYLUS Syosset members volunteered to work at CP Nassau
County Group Home located in Bellmore. The volunteers made sure those with
Cerebral Palsy residents all had a great time by playing games with them such as
connect 4, tree decorating, and Uno; helping them complete various activities such
as drawing, making paper creations, and writing a letter to their family members.
Except those, worthwhile to mention is the cultural celebration activity that the
volunteers previously designed and prepared for the residents: to make Irish
Shortbread Cookies. The volunteers used butter, vanilla extract, flour, sugar, and
corn starch to help the residents to: identify the ingredients; mix them to make the
dough; use cutouts to shape the dough into a clover shape; place them in the baking
pan; and let the clover-shaped dough to be baked in the oven; and finally spread the
sugar on the top to finish the baking process. In the end, we found the residents
enjoying the cookies by smiling and saying “ taste good”!
Group home staff and residents treated the volunteers with cupcakes and drinks
they previously prepared for them and welcome them back very soon.
All of the residents like the volunteers and managed to create precious experiences
and memories.
