AYLUS Syosset Branch Volunteers At Long Island Native Plant Initiative On 3/1/25

Written By Jeffrey Chen
On March 1st, AYLUS Syosset Branch Volunteers went to the Long Island Native Plant Initiative
to help out with tasks. The volunteers were split into groups for sifting, seed separation, storing
seeds, raking leaves, planting, and preparing for the May spring sale. For the past couple
weeks, we have been taking the seeds off the stems of switchgrass, March 1st having been the
last batch of seeds separated. Most of the separated seeds have also been sifted to continue
removing more of the grass from seeds. Additionally, perennials/forbes and switchgrass seeds
were put in bags to store as a seed bank. Oak leaves from outside were also ranked; in order to
clean up the nursery and simultaneously collect a great compost. Prickly pears were stored into
six packs and prepared for the May spring sale. The last thing that AYLUS Syosset branch did
was grind down yarrow buds for seeds. This concludes the work that Syosset AYLUS
volunteers did on March 1st.
