On February 1st, the Syosset AYLUS organization went to the Long Island Native Plant Initiative to help out at the greenhouse. Our primary goal for the day was to sift out seeds. We worked with special tools and bins to collect the seeds, which were then sifted into a separate bin using a finer grating tool. This allowed us to remove unwanted debris such as branches, leaves, and dirt, leaving us with only the seeds. We repeated this process multiple times to ensure that we were left with only seeds. After collecting the seeds, we learned that next time we would use a machine to separate everything, leaving only the seeds. These seeds are then bagged and can be sold to customers. Once we finished the sifting process, we cleaned up by collecting the leaves and branches on the floor and placing them into a recycling bin, which would later be disposed of in the compost. We were accompanied by Pam, one of the Long Island Native Plant Initiative workers, who guided us through the sifting process and helped us with the steps. Overall, the Syosset AYLUS organization was very successful in helping the Long Island Native Plant Initiative accomplish its goal for the day, which was to sift out a significant amount of seeds from the collected buckets.
