On January 11th, 2025, Jason Huang, Anhang Lu, Zoe Xia and Serena Chen, members of the AYLUS Great Neck chapter, volunteered at the Long Island Native Plant Initiative (LINPI), which is involved in a meaningful seed cleanup. We cleaned seeds from three native plants: Big Bluestem, Little Bluestem, and Indian grass. These plants are important to the local ecosystem
In this activity, we carefully separated the seeds from the remainder of the plant, to ensure that they are clean enough. We also sorted and organized them to make them suitable for subsequent planting and ecological restoration projects. At the same time, we also collected the plant rods removed during the cleaning process so that they can be converted into organic fertilizer later, contributing to recycling. This process gives us a deep understanding of the importance of plant protection and resource recycling.
Through this activity, we not only learned the skills of seed cleaning, but also helped to preserve the native plant diversity of Long Island. It was a meaningful and fulfilling experience.
