On April 6th, 2019, the East Cobb Branch of AYLUS held our Youth Tutoring program at the Switzer Library. One student showed up, low turnout due to the spring break, with 2 student tutors (Nick Vincent and Kevin Shen) to help the incoming students.
The East Cobb Branch holds Youth Tutoring program every Saturday during the school year, providing an opportunity for kids in the East Cobb area access to help with their studies. The program gives students a comfortable and engaging environment to ask for help in academics. The interaction between tutors and students also makes learning more enjoyable and fun.
The student was a 4th-grade student. The tutors worked focused on 4th-grade math, multiplication, and divisions. Nick came up with a worksheet for the student and spent time walking him through the problems and the student got faster in solving them and was able to do some by heart. He said he wanted to come back next week to tackle some more complex problems.
The student has been coming to the program every week since the inception of the program. His grandma was very pleased with this opportunity that her grandson has shown interests and confidence in his school work and has been asking to come to the tutoring session every week. His grades have been improving. His improved interest and confidence helped his motivation and performance at school. She has signed him up for the rest of the school year.
The student volunteers made the good use of the downtime, due to the low show up of the students (due to the spring break week) by volunteering the shelving for the library. They have been getting very efficient in doing this since the beginning of the school. They quickly finished the task and fulfilled some other miscellaneous tasks from the circulation desk. Two hours went fast. Student volunteers all were ready for getting back to the groove, finishing up the remaining of the school year!
