Aylus Great Neck Branch Volunteer at Bethpage State Park on November 23rd, 2024

On 11/23/24 from 9 AM to 11 PM, the AYLUS Great Neck branch and the Syosset branch worked to turn a previously weed-ridden field into a place where many plants could flourish.

Bethpage State Park is a park with beautiful forest trails, lush green fields, a golf course, and much more. However, there are still some… undesirable places. The area we worked on was originally a sort of garbage dump for a while: it was a place used to store wood chips and was full of dead trees. To protect the soil from weeds, mats were placed over the area; however, as the wood chips and other organic material kept piling up, weeds started to grow through the mats anyway. Things eventually got overwhelming there.

But volunteer groups like AYLUS were there to help out. Equipped with rakes, shovels, and small saws, AYLUS spent many events chopping down the weeds and clearing the area. Finally, on this event, we finally finished removing the remaining debris and lifted the mats.

With the volunteers’ hard work, this area can be revitalized and Bethpage can gain another beautiful portion of land to go along with the rest.
