Reported by Angelina Yingying Liu:
Updates on my “School Leadership” Project : With their partners, my Model UN Club members constructed their own position statements for their respective countries. They researched information on the topic of climate change online and used it to formulate possible solutions to the problem in their country. My country for this particular topic was Indonesia, and my partner and I succeeded in writing and rehearsing our position statement. Volunteer service was performed on January 29th, 2019 (40min).
Updates on my “Youth Tutoring” Project: I continued to introduce more English words into my students’ vocabulary, mostly through reading and then translating English picture books they selected. I kept the experience interactive by asking them questions relating to their own experiences. We also did many hands-on activities, including counting games, word games, and drawing/coloring tasks. The two girls have warmed up to me, and though there are times when they are hard to manage. Overall I feel that I have initiated the process of integrating English into their vocabulary.
As for me, from these classes I have learned how to coax and manage them when they are restless, and subtly guide them in the right direction during our classes. I hope to further encourage them to utilize English in conversation in the coming sessions. Tutoring younger children opens a door for me to service my community. it’s a great opportunity for the two girls to prepare for pre-school in the Fall. Our classes are filled with both fun and learning. I encourage more GPA members to find some opportunities to tutoring, as it’s both a great and meaningful experience.
Volunteer service was performed on January 25th (1 hour class); February 1st (40 min class); February 15th (1 hour class); and February 21st (1 hour class).
A Note From the GPA President Cassie Tammy Wang:
