Reported by Cassie Tammy Wang

Greater Princeton AYLUS (GPA), NJ Branch, has many talented members. GPA encourage its members to use their talents to serve the community. Here comes one of our active members Kevin Song, who starts a wonderful year of 2019 with his “Ed Tutoring” projects well planned:

Community Service Planned by Kevin Song:

Hello everyone! My name is Kevin Song. I currently go to Thomas Grover Middle School, and I am in 8th grade. I believe that joining the GPA will help me obtain more skills so I could help my community more.

I love math. From attending math tournaments, to being on the MATHCOUNTS team, I have been involved in many math activities. My love of math was sparked in third grade, when my teacher gave us a lot of challenges that involved numbers in different bases, and many other challenging concepts. Even though these challenges were difficult, I still persevered through them, and learned many new concepts. Soon I want to start free tutoring sessions for math. I have already done a tutoring session like this in China.

I also like Chinese. Ever since I was born, I have been going back to China almost every summer. Last summer, I tutored students in China about English, and helped them improve their pronunciation. I also have participated in many Debate and Speech contests at my Chinese school, and I have won first place in the entire northeast region almost every year. I have hosted many shows at my Chinese school too.

Science is also one of my interests. I am currently in the Science Olympiad Team at Grover Middle School. At the most recent competition in the Camden County College Regionals, our school won first place, and I earned four medals for our team. I am participating in many science activities outside of school. For example, I am currently in a Science Bowl club that is meant to prepare us for Science Bowl in high school. I may want to offer tutoring for how to prepare for making the Science Olympiad team, and am also collaborating with my friend, Raymond, who is also in the GPA.

Programming is another favorite of mine. I am currently in the Game On event in Science Olympiad, which involves using Scratch, a programming language, to make a science-related game. I am currently working on a game called “Miner Mania!” I know a bit of HTML, but right now, the main programming language I know is Scratch. I look forward to learning Python.

Public speaking is very enjoyable. I am currently the President of the WWPESA Speaking/Toastmasters club, and I enjoy public speaking as a hobby. I like making funny, engaging speeches, both in English and Chinese. I plan to put my public speaking skills to use in the GPA by speaking at events or advertising for fundraisers.

My favorite instrument to play is the Cello. I started playing in fourth grade, and ever since then, I have played at nursing homes, attended a masterclass by Joshua Roman, and performed at many places. I am currently in the Youth Orchestra of Central Jersey (YOCJ). I like Cello, because the sound of the Cello is very beautiful and soothing.

Joining the GPA is a correct decision, because I believe GPA will put my abilities to use in a variety of good ways. I look forward to helping more people and making our planet a better place for everyone.
