On Saturday, July 1st, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm, the Roslyn Branch volunteered at the Long Island Native Plant Initiative.
LINPI is a non profit organization that aims to incorporate native plants into residential areas. They have a wide selection of native plants that are grown and sold throughout the year. For our first task, we filled up small and medium pots with starting mix, which is used to provide nutrients to the growing plants. After the pots were watered, volunteers either planted the seedlings into the pots, or created labels for the plants. When planting the seedlings, we had to carefully separate the plants that grew together, as their roots were very long and tangled. It was challenging to keep the plants upright, especially the smaller plants. Some of the native plants planted include butterfly weed and milkweed, which caterpillars also feed on.
In total, we filled about 20 trays of pots with plants. We were proud of our productive day, despite the hot weather. In the future, we hope to visit back and volunteer again, as LINPI has many plants that still need to be put into pots.
Members that participated include: Serena Wu (4 hours), Jolina Wu (4 hours), Mingyao Xu (4 hours), Isabelle Tsui (4 hours), Natalie Tsui (4 hours)
