On June 10, 2023, 8 members of AYLUS gathered together at the Colvin Run Mill to preserve the historical site as part of the Invasive Management Area Program (IMA).
Guided by Julie, the lead of IMA at Colvin Run Mill, AYLUS volunteers split into two main groups to help remove invasive species and protect native species. Before splitting up, members learned about local invasive and native species to watch out for. Equipped with gloves and protected by bug spray and sunscreen, our volunteers set on their way with great determination to preserve the environment around the Colvin Run Mill, which was once one of the most prosperous gristmills in the area.
During the adventure, one group actually discovered a nest with 5 eggs. Though uncertain about what bird species laid those eggs, the finding surprised everyone. Additionally, we realized that some of the invasive species were actually one of the main ingredients in Chinese medicine – many of our parents took “souvenirs” back home!
Finally, Bob, a tour guide at Colvin Run Mill and clearly an expert at his field, showed us around the mill and its inner-workings. Though almost completely constructed from wood, the mill was groundbreaking technology at the time. We are extremely grateful for the free tour that Bob gave us in exchange for our efforts volunteering at the mill.
Thanks to all the members who participated: David Cao, Michael Ma, Rachel Troung, Alex Gan, William Tian, Samuel He, Justin Yuan, Austin Huang.
Volunteering events for IMA take place every second Saturday at the Colvin Run Mill – we will be back in July!
All the best,
David Cao
