On Tuesday, April 15th, 2025, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm, members of the AYLUS Roslyn Branch volunteered at Long Island Native Plant Initiative, or LINPI, a non profit organization dedicated to preserving Long Island’s biodiversity by growing native plants.
During our time volunteering, we helped clean, pack items, and separate seeds. First, we helped remove seeds from milkweed and put the fine, fluffy tufts. It was both fun and annoying as the tufts were so light that they floated in the air, however they stuck to everything, from our gloves to our clothes. Next, we helped collect seeds from a variety of flowers so they could be used to plant new flowers. We got to see many different types of plants and were able to see where the seeds came from and how they looked. After, we helped sweep and clean the floor and pressure washed an old truck, which was a very fun process. Finally, we helped load the truck with plants and helped get rid of leaves that had fallen around the building
Volunteering at LINPI helped us gain insight into the numerous unique native plants found in Long Island. It helped teach us how to handle them and overall was a fun, educational experience. We can’t wait for the next time we can go.
