AYLUS Roslyn helps with Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery & Aquarium’s Egg Hunt (1st) on April 18, 2025

On Friday, April 18, 2025, from 12:45 PM to 3:45 PM, the AYLUS Roslyn Branch took initiative to engage in community service for the Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery & Aquarium— a learning center for children with outdoor ponds and freshwater aquariums— Egg Hunt.

When we arrived, we immediately set up the stand and were instructed on how to run the Egg Hunt. After we were given instructions on how the Egg Hunt worked, we were given a piece of paper detailing the number of kids per session and how many sessions there were. We distributed the colorful eggs onto the lawn, one bucket per incoming child. When choosing the colors of the eggs we tossed on the lawn, we did it carefully and selectively. We were careful not to pick colors that were too alike, because the children that were coming to hunt the eggs were very young. When a child arrived, we provided them with a craft and allowed them to pick the color of egg they wanted to hunt. With the help of their parents, they successfully found all of the eggs of that color. As soon as they brought the eggs back to us, we gave them a prize. The prizes consisted of plushies, bunny shaped toys, and stickers.

One of us mostly stayed at the booth to welcome the participants in and provide the instructions, craft, and prize, and the other often distributed the eggs. However, when there were misunderstandings with the parents about the entry ticket or the egg hunt in general, we worked together to give firm instructions on how to solve the issues or answer the questions. We frequently communicated with the staff through the provided walkie-talkie if we needed help or if there were any problems.

Overall, we learned how to work closer as a team and improved our communication skills. We focused on our own separate duties, but when there was trouble, we worked together as a team to solve the problem and provide the parents and children with the best possible experience at the egg hunt. By learning how to use a walkie-talkie successfully, we spoke to and communicated frequently with the staff when needed.
