Newtown AYLUS Members Help Elementary Schoolers’ Reading Skills (5th)

On Saturday, April 19, 2025, members of Newtown AYLUS volunteered to host a reading session for elementary schoolers. As a group, they read the book “Who was Ruth Bader Ginsburg?”, a biography about the famous lawyer, activist, and former associate justice of the Supreme Court. Through introducing young readers to this book, the Newtown AYLUS team aimed to not just improve their literacy, but more importantly instill a deep appreciation for the work that activists such as Ginsburg did to create the freedoms and rights that they enjoy today.

Two members led the initiative, guiding a group of 12 children. They created a nurturing space for young readers to improve their reading skills as they took turns reading aloud. Furthermore, at various critical points in the book, Newtown AYLUS led discussions surrounding the importance of Ginsburg’s activism, encouraging them to make a difference in their community, however small, just as Ginsburg did.

The event was very successful. The children demonstrated a strong grasp on Ginsburg’s history and the significance of her work today as well as confidence and understanding surrounding the book.

Members who participated were Rhianna Zhang (event leader) and Kylee Guo. Each contributed an hour of their time.
