On April 14th, from 1pm to almost 3pm, the AYLUS Dix Hills Branch dedicated to environmental stewardship by volunteering at Garvies Point Preserve, where they participated in a trail cleanup initiative aimed at preserving the natural beauty of the area. The Garvies Point Preserve Loop Trail in Glen Cove, NY, offers a scenic and educational hiking experience along the North Shore of Long Island. This 1.6-mile loop trail meanders through a diverse landscape of woodlands, meadows, and shoreline, providing hikers with a glimpse into the rich natural and geological history of the area.
Equipped with trash bags and trash grabbers, the volunteers hiked through the scenic trails with a shared sense of purpose—to restore and maintain the integrity of the preserve without disturbing its delicate ecosystem. As they made their way along the mile-long trail, they were met with a disheartening variety of litter that had been carelessly left behind. Among the debris were plastic water bottles, broken glass, aluminum cans, food wrappers, and other discarded items that posed a threat to both wildlife and the natural landscape. The volunteers worked diligently, removing trash piece by piece while remaining mindful of the flora and fauna around them. Their efforts not only improved the cleanliness and safety of the trail but also served as a meaningful way to connect with nature and raise awareness about the importance of environmental responsibility.
