AYLUS Roslyn helps out at a School of CCA of Long island (70) on April 6th, 2025

The Roslyn AYLUS volunteers helped out at the Chinese Cultural Association of Long Island’s school on a gloomy Sunday of April 6th. From 1:30 to 5 PM at Neck South High School, our group supported various activities at the school.

As Teaching Assistants (TAs), we, the volunteers, helped and supported the teachers to ensure the well-being and concentration of the children. Our daily tasks involved more than just guiding students to the restroom, helping with water breaks, and managing snack purchases. When class began, we pitched in to gather everyone’s homework and print out today’s classwork. As part of our efforts, we compiled a list of vocabulary words on index cards. We made sure to make extra cards for absent students. During snack time, we escorted everyone to the snack area to make sure everyone got their snacks in an orderly manner and avoid any arguments. After snack time, we guided the students through the class activities. Once class was over, we pitched in to help the teacher tidy the classroom by rearranging the tables and chairs and ensuring everything was clean. We aimed to create an environment where students feel encouraged to give their best, focusing and actively participating in their exploration of Chinese knowledge.

During their extracurricular activities sections from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m., we brought the students to their respective extracurricular activities. Each volunteer had different tasks to take care of the students in different extracurricular activities, which included calligraphy, art, Kungfu, and others. In Kungfu, we made sure that the students did not mess around with each other and focused on learning new moves and enjoying Chinese culture differently. While it was initially challenging to memorise all the new Kungfu moves within a short amount of time, they managed to succeed as they practised and became more familiar with them.

We aim to encourage a more spirited community and cultivate a positive student atmosphere. Engaging in this rewarding effort creates a lasting impact on the younger children and generations. Working closely with educators and children to celebrate and explore Chinese culture has been a truly enriching experience. I’m grateful for the opportunity to help CCA achieve its important goal of sharing Chinese culture and education with the local community.
