On March 29th, members of the Syosset AYLUS organization volunteered at Long Island Native Plant, where we were assisted with various tasks assigned by Pam, a staff member at the greenhouse. We completed tasks such as labeling and filling seed packets for their future sales. We also up-potted plants from smaller pots or larger pots in order for more growth and to allow more space for the roots to grow. In addition, we also used rice hulls to cover the tops of the plants to prevent moisture retention, weed suppression and soil drainage. Another task was labeling the plant labels and organizing the extras into alphabetical order in order to be easily discoverable in future use. Overall, the AYLUS organization was highly effective in helping out Long Island Native Plant initiative.
