On March 9th, from 1:30 to 4:30, AYLUS volunteers helped at the Long Island Chinese School located at SUNY Old Westbury.
Volunteers spent three hours watching over their designated classes. In the classrooms the teachers taught students different Chinese characters, radicals and stories. While that happened, volunteers kept the class under control, cleaned the white board and helped struggling students with their work.
Two volunteers from the Dix Hills branch also went to the weekly chess club, where they partnered up with Coach Jack to teach the advanced class. One of the main priorities was keeping the class under control, as the kids were pretty rowdy. After a quick lesson about a new chess opening the volunteers helped set up boards and handed out pieces. Today was week 3 of the tournament, so kids were matched up according to their past wins and losses. One of the volunteers set up a board themselves and played chess with kids that finished early. After all was done, the volunteers packed up the boards and cleaned up the classroom. Trash was picked up and the chairs were pushed in.
Thanks to the efforts of AYLUS volunteers they were able to make learning at the Long Island Chinese School a more fun and interactive place to learn.
