On Saturday, March 8th, the Great Neck Branch of AYLUS volunteered at the Great Neck Station Library. There, they held another AAPI reading and crafts session. The volunteers arrived slightly early to help set up the activities for today, which included crocheting, quick dry clay, and pipe cleaner crafts. Once they finished setting up, kids started to arrive, and we read two books. One was about a young boy and his grandfather, who initially have trouble connecting due to language barriers, but later overcome it through their shared love of art. The second book was about a young girl and her grandmother, who bond over the history of making mochi in their family. The kids greatly enjoyed the two stories. Afterwards, the younger children were able to pick a craft of their choosing, and some made little clay flowers and other items. Others chose to learn to crochet, which was both challenging and fun. Overall, this week’s session was a success, and everyone enjoyed their time volunteering.
