On March 4th, members of AYLUS gathered at the Great Neck Library and helped prepare and set up for the upcoming calligraphy lesson that was going to be taught. The members were able to first fold and set up the papers and inks used for the lesson, and were able to sort things out in an orderly manner. They also made sure that everything was in check for presenting.
During the presentation, the members had different tasks, from filling up inkwells, giving out rice paper, and handing out instruction sheets, to guiding the calligraphy learners, translating, and learning a little about calligraphy themselves as they also had the chance to follow along with the teacher’s instructions and learn a thing or two about the art of calligraphy. Although the members did have difficulty translating what was being said in Chinese to English, they learned from their experience and know how to improve the experience for all. During the end of the lesson, the AYLUS members, using diligence in mind, cleaned the ink off of the inkwells and the cups and made sure that they were ready to be used for the next lesson.
At the end of the day, the members of AYLUS were able to see what they were able to improve on their next lesson, as they gained knowledge for a better experience for all, and they were able to passively learn about calligraphy as well, learning more about the culture of the Chinese people and gaining insight about the beautiful art of calligraphy as well. The members of AYLUS are glad to have participated in this event as they were able to challenge themselves with their presenting abilities, teamwork, cleanliness and orderliness and helping others when they needed guidance, traits that life would certainly deem important.
