On Saturday, February 22, 2025 from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM, the AYLUS Roslyn Branch took
initiative to engage in community service for NOSH Delivers— located at Glen Cove— a non-
profit organization aiming to supply food to people in need.
Right when everyone arrived, they were immediately put to work in either stocking and
organizing the shelves for arriving patrons, or making NOSH Bags for children. The volunteers
assigned to replenish the shelves completed their task quickly, only to follow up with leading
guests through the rows of food and assisting them with a pair of helping hands if they weren’t
physically able to reach a can or hold their bag.
The ones assembling the NOSH bags did so with much intent. These little brown bags
contained a non-perishable lunch and a snack for those who have school on the weekends or
aren’t provided a lunch at school. In addition, some kids aren’t provided any snacks, and these
bags are meant to satisfy their craving. These little brown bags were filled with either serving
size cereal and milk, mac ‘n cheese and hot cheetos, or instant chili / instant ramen. The
volunteers came together to decorate the bags with gemstones, draw cute pictures, or aspire
with inspirational, uplifting quotes. Finally, these bags were left on a shelf in the aisle where
people in need could come and take one or two for their kids or even themselves if they wanted
one.
From this experience, one learned the true importance of helping those who are less fortunate,
because you should always think about others’ situations. Food insecurity is a big issue, still, but
working with NOSH allows teenage volunteers to give back to their community.
