On February 15th, 2025, the AYLUS Orlando branch successfully installed a Little Library at Sylvan Lake Park, along with a collection of books to stock it.
This initiative was inspired by previous interactions between AYLUS volunteers and local children who appeared to have limited access to books. Recognizing a potential gap in literacy resources, we decided to establish a Little Library in this area to provide children and the community with easier access to reading materials.
Sylvan Lake Park, located in Seminole County, is a luxurious 133-acre recreation hub known for its athletic facilities, hiking trails, and nature-rich environment. It features tennis courts, soccer fields, a boat launch for Sylvan Lake, and shaded picnic areas, making it an ideal location to encourage both outdoor activity and reading engagement.
The AYLUS Orlando volunteers completed the following:
– Purchased materials for the Little Library.
– Assembled the structure, reinforcing it with 50 pounds of sand to ensure stability.
– Leveled and secured the library in the park.
– Stocked the library with a selection of books for readers of all ages.
This project aligns with AYLUS Orlando’s commitment to education and environmentalism. By enhancing local parks with resources like Little Libraries, we aim to:
- Encourage literacy in under-resourced communities.
- Beautify and improve accessibility in public spaces.
- Foster a culture of community service through sustainable projects.
