On Saturday, January 18th, the Great Neck Branch of AYLUS hosted a reading and crocheting event. The first of six weekly events to be held at Parkville Library, volunteers this week read three Lunar New Year books to the children and taught them how to crochet. With Lunar New Year coming up on the 29th, it was apt to share this festival with the kids. One book was about a multicultural family, celebrating Lunar New Year and New Years from other countries too. The second was inspired by “The Twelve Days of Christmas”, replacing each day with a traditional aspect of Lunar New Year instead, such as five lanterns, or three dumplings. The last one was about a young Mulan’s Chinese New Year, where she learns to love the time spent with family during the New Year. Afterwards, we taught the children how to crochet. Each receiving a crochet hook and some yarn, the kids (and their parents) were split into groups to learn from us the basics of crocheting. It was a lot of fun for everyone, and most people were able to quickly pick up on how to do it. With five more weeks of fun, this event will surely turn out to be a success.
