Reported by Amanda Weng
On Saturday, January 11, the AYLUS Greater Tulsa branch volunteered at Asbury Church’s second Saturday volunteer event. There, we made mats from plastic bags for those who are homeless. First, unwanted plastic bags were cut into plastic strips and tied together, then they were tied together to make “plarn”, which stands for plastic yarn. These plastic yarn are then rolled up like yarn balls, which were later used to be crocheted into mats. Today at Asbury Church, we managed to make more than 15 “plarn” balls that consisted around an average of 60 plastic bags. Mats made through this process are then sent out to homeless people who may need a little warmth in this cold winter. Through this volunteer event, we learned that a plain plastic bag at your house may be a whole different thing for people in hardships.
