On January 4th, the Syosset AYLUS organization volunteered at the Long Island Native Plant Initiative greenhouse. The members were tasked with a variety of activities throughout the day. Initially, we repotted soil into containers and created additional pots as needed. We also moved frozen soil that had been stored outside to a warmer location to allow it to thaw, ensuring it could be used for future planting. Later, we planted seeds in the pots with the prepared soil and placed them inside the greenhouse to grow. Another task involved sifting through seeds to separate them from any unwanted debris. Using a sifter and a basket, we carefully collected the seeds while removing any extraneous materials. Additionally, we had the opportunity to use a new machine to further sort and organize the seeds. This machine efficiently separated the smaller seeds from larger unwanted particles, such as sticks, dirt, and debris. A team of members worked around the machine, removing the unwanted materials and ensuring only clean seeds remained. We also moved pallets outside to clear space for future use. To conclude the day, we helped maintain the greenhouse by sweeping up any spilled soil and cleaning the floor. Overall, the Syosset AYLUS organization was successful in supporting the Long Island Native Plant Initiative and contributing to the greenhouse’s operations.
