AYLUS Roslyn Volunteers at the Cerebral Palsy Association of Nassau County’s Group Home (35th) on January 4th, 2025

On Saturday, January 4 th of 2025, from 1:00 to 3:30 pm EST, 6 members of the AYLUS Roslyn branch visited C.P. Nassau’s Hicksville residential home.
C.P. Nassau has been supporting many individuals with disabilities for over 75 years and it provides various services including medical and primary care, therapy, education, etc. and it also has group homes like the Hicksville residential home we visited today.
At today’s visit, we started off by making cake, per the residents’ request. It was later blended up into puree food so the residents were able to enjoy them.
While waiting for the cake to be baked, we did some fun games with the residents.

Though Hicksville is one of the houses with residents less functioning in mobility and communicating ability, we managed and had some fun activities with the residents. The fun games we did included a magnet fishing game, a big tower of Connect 4, a velcro bullseye and ball game, all designed for developing the motor skills of the residents.
Through this volunteering event, we learned that even when some of the residents acted uninterested in participating, we shall continue making efforts to motivate and encourage their participation. Even just one little participation lifted the spirits of the whole room, inspiring all the attended AYLUS members and the residents. It makes this volunteering meaningful and the attended AYLUS members look forward to the next volunteering events in CP Nassau and beyond.

Members who participated include:
Austin Guo (2.5 hours), Leah Chan (2.5hours), Kyle Shih (2.5 hours), Haoyang Sun (2.5 hours), Maggie Xiao (2.5 hours), and Leo Zheng (2.5 hours).
