AYLUS Roslyn helps out at a School of CCA of Long island (64) on December 15th, 2024

On Sunday, December 15th, the AYLUS Roslyn Branch volunteered at the Chinese Cultural Association of Long Island’s Chinese school from 1:30PM – 5:00PM. Our jobs as volunteers was to become teacher assistants and help students with various activities and classwork. Today we had an additional task of helping make sure the end of the year holiday party ran smoothly.

As TA’s we started our afternoon off by welcoming the students into the classroom, helping the teacher get set up with the lesson, and putting aside any snacks and foods they might have brought for the party later on. We started class where we did fun-filled activities such as

holiday bingo and crafts. TAs helped the teacher with activities such as printing more paper, handing supplies out, bringing the kids to the bathroom, and checking classwork and homework.

The end of the year holiday party at the Chinese school was an enjoyable experience and well-organized with the help of volunteering parents. This was an event that offered both a fun and educational experience for the kids. Throughout the party, we assisted with a variety of responsibilities to ensure a smooth event such as setting up the classroom and food, as well as serving it to each person to ensure an orderly manner. TAs also helped with other small tasks, such as cleaning up messes, restocking of plates, and comforting children. As the party came to a close we made dismissal an efficient process, helping with the clean up, packing up the students belongings and ensuring each kid got home safely with their parents/guardians. We also bid them a warm farewell, helping them leave the classroom excited to come back again next year.

Although these tasks may seem easy, it allowed for everyone to have a fun, enjoyable time during the party and during class. Being a TA allowed for us to give the student a positive and educational environment, while lessening the work put onto the teacher. Being able to volunteer at a school allowed us to experience how much effort it takes to be a teacher and run a class while also learning to be compassionate and patient to young learning students.
