On December 6th, starting at 7:15 PM, ten AYLUS volunteers gathered at Feed My Starving Children, also known as FMSC. We first watched an introductory video and it taught us how we were going to pack our food for the Dominican Republic. First, we had to wear our hairnets around our hair. This is because we don’t want our hair falling in our food. That would be a hazard. Next, it told us to go wash our hands at the washing station for 20s (Seconds). After that, we would have to go wear our gloves and go to our packing stations, with volunteers from AYLUS and other organizations, which came to a total of 15 volunteers. Lastly, all we needed to do was scoop, collect, measure, seal, and pack. Our foods, packed in a bag with the words “Manna” were made out of 4 different foods. This included rice, soy, vitamins, and vegetables. They were all sorted into bags, and our weight measurers had to make sure they were at the target of 375-395 grams. If they were not, we would have to add/remove ingredients. Furthermore, our sealers (Only for adults) would have to press down the machine which would turn the light red. Once the lights turned blue on the machine, it was sealed and ready to go. The sealer would then put the bags on a table, and the boxer would box it until there were exactly 36 bags in a box. Then they would carry it and then the boxes would be up and ready to ship! We consecutively repeated this process, and other volunteers made fun games to see who could seal the most bags, or pack the most boxes! Lastly, we finished and cleaned up everything with our volunteers and then cleaned our hands. Once we finished, all the volunteers packed more than 20,000 meals, or 3,492 bags. This would save 50+ kids for a YEAR! Averagely, Aylus group packed approximately 2160 meals that can feed 5.9 kids for a year. We are very proud of what we achieved.
