On November 24th, 2024, AYLUS Roslyn Branch volunteered at Chinese Cultural Association of Long Island’s Chinese School (School of CCA) from 1:30 to 5:00 PM.
Volunteers worked as teacher’s assistants, helping the teacher with tasks such as printing, grading homework, and handing out papers. We made sure kids were on task, comfortable, and walked them to get snacks, water, as well as the bathroom. We greeted the children, helped them unpack and settle down, and took attendance. We also assisted in calming down kids who felt homesick so the teacher could focus on effectively educating the students.
The school held a Thanksgiving event from 3:00 to 5:00 PM where students could purchase tickets to buy food, drinks, and enter raffles. Parents would pick up their children and bring them to the cafeteria for the festivities. Volunteers stayed with students whose parents were unable to make it or late to make sure the children felt included.
Working as a TA gives volunteers insights on what it’s like to be a teacher. It allows us to connect with the younger generation and become more understanding and empathetic. It teaches us to be more patient, time efficient, and attentive.
