The Roslyn AYLUS volunteers assisted at the Chinese Cultural Association of Long Island’s school on September 15th. From 1:30 to 5 p.m. at Great Neck South High School, our group supported various activities at the school.
As Teaching Assistants (TAs), we start our fulfilling afternoon by promptly moving to our assigned classrooms and checking in with the teachers—an essential task we perform every week. Today, we had a parent conference after school, so the campus was bustling with various activities. Our duties today involved more than just taking attendance, checking students’ classwork, and guiding students to the restroom. When class began, we had to ensure appropriate student behavior while helping the teacher remember each parent’s name and prepare for the parent conference. Additionally, we aimed to create an environment where students felt motivated to do their best, stay focused, and engage in learning about Chinese culture and knowledge. When students faced challenges in hearing the teacher or understanding the lesson, we supported them by repeating questions and patiently guiding them through the learning process.
From 4 to 5 p.m., during the parent conference, we collaborated with our teacher to guide the parents in partnering with their children to create the best environment for students to study or actively listen. As the teacher gave a detailed introduction of the year’s lessons, we assisted in answering questions from both students and parents, helping to create an atmosphere where everyone in the classroom could visualize what their Chinese learning experience will look like this year.
Overall, we had a productive afternoon assisting at the Chinese school. The positive engagement of both the students and parents demonstrates the dedication of the teachers and assistants. I’m grateful for the opportunity to help CCA achieve its important goal of sharing Chinese culture and education with the local community.
