AYLUS Syosset Volunteers at Jones Beach Energy and Nature Center (6/1/24)

On 6/1/24, members of AYLUS Syosset went to the Jones Beach Energy and Nature Center to cut invasive species out of the surrounding area. The center is a building constructed from 10 acres of cement taken straight out of the parking lot to be repurposed. Volunteers focused on mugwort in the fields in front of the building and were told to cut the plants out instead of ripping them out to weaken them and let the native plants take over instead of disturbing the land.

Invasive species can lead to the extinction of native plants and animals, destroy biodiversity, and reduce and alter wildlife habitat. The spread of invasive species negatively affects the environment, economy, human and animal health and safety. All life depends on healthy ecosystems.

Members participated: Jonathan Bao (2 hrs), Suiwai Li (2 hrs), Felix Zheng (2 hrs), Kyle Bao (2 hrs), Rayya Zheng (2.5 hrs), Kingston Lu (2 hrs), Rachel Zhang (2.5 hrs), Nicole Zhang (2.5 hrs), Weiying Shi (3.5 hrs).
