On November 19th, 2023, The Roslyn AYLUS branch helped out at The Chinese Cultural Association of Long Island (School of CCA) from 1:30 to 5:00 PM.
The volunteers helped out as TAs (teaching assistants) who help teachers keep kids safe and on task. We walked kids to the bathroom, to get water, and to buy snacks. We would encourage students to participate and follow the teacher’s instructions. If students didn’t understand or didn’t hear the teacher, we would repeat directions/questions and give pointers to lead them in the right direction. If kids were feeling frustrated or homesick, we would wait with them patiently and calm them down.
In the cafeteria, the students were able to buy tickets to spend on food for Thanksgiving from 3-5 pm. Kids could buy and share different foods including drinks, savory foods, and desserts. Parents would pick up their children and bring them to the cafeteria. We stayed with the students until their parents arrived and shared food to make sure the children didn’t feel left out.
