On August 5th, the AYLUS Pearland branch introduced free community art lessons held at the West Pearland Library. Upon the increasing interest in art, volunteers provided interactive yet educational classes for individuals of all ages, especially ones who wished to explore their artistic talents.
At the start of the class, the teachers and teaching assistants introduced themselves and their plan for the day, as the first project was a color pencil line art drawing. The students were guided through an analysis of how to study the reference (a Winnie the Pooh scene) based on a basic grid; from blocking out proportions to comparing perspectives. As the kids began to familiarize themselves with the process, they were then able to design and detail to their liking. Since art isn't a one-day process, everyone collectively agreed to continue working on this drawing next week, pacing themselves until they were satisfied.
Volunteers found that these classes promoted skill development and self-confidence: from kids who always enjoyed doodling to ones who have never picked up a pencil by will. These classes also facilitated social interaction, as the students liked to discuss ideas and compare their drawings with friends. Additionally, this was a great way to provide an hour of relaxation; allowing them to freely explore a hobby without force.
After the class ended, the kids eventually enjoyed snacks and discussed what they
wished their next project to be.
