On Friday, June 30th, 2023, from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM, the AYLUS volunteers of Syosset congregated at the Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary & Audubon Center to assist in relocating several plants from a field near the woods’ entrance to the site’s front yard. Each member lent a helping hand by doing a series of various tasks. Activities included but were not limited to raking away stray leaves which pervaded the designated planting area and digging the plants out of the ground. Further tasks comprised replanting them in new locations and finally watering the plants. Tools that were generally used consisted of rakes, shovels, watering cans, and trowels. Digging: The shovel was the primary tool for removing a plant and was used to pull out the plant whole, making sure that the roots were connected to the stems to ensure the plants’ survival. Planting: A hole was dug in the ground, large enough for the roots of the plant to be covered. After the plant was placed in the hole, the surrounding soil was filled and compacted to secure its stability and balance. The main focus was a species with white flowers, and a numerous amount was moved to an area that could attract both bees and butterflies while being situated in a better environment. By doing so, more pollination could occur and more plants would be able to thrive better. By the end of the gathering, the once vacant, empty, grounds of the front yard soon became home to many, and the plants were successfully repositioned, ready to adapt to its new ecosystem.
