Program Background: The Healthy Living Style Youth Advocacy program is a venture supported by the Prevention Institution and operated by the Light and Salt Association. Its primary objective is to advocate for healthy living among youth. Recognizing the importance of youth involvement, AYLUS Pearland volunteers were invited to contribute their expertise in program design, evaluation, and execution. In its second year, the program underwent modifications based on valuable feedback received from the previous year’s volunteers. As a result, the program expanded to a week-long intensive initiative, and college students were invited to lead the youth participants.
Day 1 Activities:
Morning Session: On the first day of the program, June 19, the morning session commenced with an overview of the program's purpose and format. Led by the college students from Sam Houston State University, volunteers completed a survey on nutrition and healthy diet for data collection. Following this, they collaborated in designing healthy meals for different age groups, utilizing the MyPlate framework—a government template that emphasizes the proportions of each food group required for a balanced diet. The volunteers then served at the LSA’s charity clinic to educate the patients on healthy diet.
Afternoon Session: Dr. Furjen Deng, Professor of Sociology at Sam Houston State University, delivered the opening remarks on cancer prevention. Dr. Deng guided the volunteers to collect demographic data related to different types of cancers and documented effective prevention strategies. This data will be utilized in the creation of a brochure aimed at distributing vital information to different ethnic communities.
