Chapel Hill Branch Volunteers at Wildflower Lane Farm on June 18, 2023

On June 18, the AYLUS Chapel Hill Branch volunteered at the “Wildflower Lane Farm”. The farm was located fairly far away and it actually took some time to even get there. The farm owner Jim was very nice and he provided us with instructions and assigned us with corresponding jobs. Our priority was to harvest kale and put them into bags and those kale will be donated to PORCH, who collaborates with the farm to donate kale to the community as part of their hunger-relief program. In total we needed 365 bags of kale and each with about 0.5 pounds of Kale. For the kale harvesting, we use shears to cut the biggest leaves on the kale, then put them into a bin  and we would throw away the yellowish leaves if we came in contact with them. We were able to harvest 9 rows of kale and pack 36 baskets of kale. After collecting all that was needed, we would weigh a bag of 0.5 kale and separate every 10 bags into a basket. Once we filled a basket, we proceeded by putting it inside the cold room and move onto the next one. It was fairly hot that day, so it was exhausting for all of the volunteers in the end, but everyone worked efficiently, allowing us to finish earlier than expected. And not gonna lie, this was a very pleasant experience overall. We, the Chapel Hill branch of AYLUS, will try our best to keep this good momentum and will proceed to seek more volunteer opportunities. We hope that our efforts will make the community a better place.

Volunteers who participated in this event are: Luna Chen (3 hrs), Nicholas Wang (3 hrs), Karen Lin (3 hrs), Kevin Lu (3 hrs), Jack Xu (3 hrs)
