On the 14th and 15th of June 2023, AYLUS Pearland worked with summer school students at Ed White Elementary in Houston Independent School District, named for Ed White, the first American spacewalker. The volunteers were dispersed across classrooms and assisted instructors by answering students’ questions and clarifying confusing chunks of the course to confounded children.
The volunteers accompanied the classes they helped serve during recess. Andy Jiang, a former AYLUS volunteer, generously delivered delicious meals to Pearland branch volunteers while they conversed with erudite students eating lunch after an instructional morning, after which they would transition to another class to work on another subject.
Students at Ed White were well-behaved and enjoyable to work with. With the help of volunteers, their learning was accelerated, and the experience richly rewarded them by improving their education. The summer school program provides a platform for any AYLUS volunteer looking to make a positive difference on the lives of young children.
