On May 26 from 9:00-3:00, the AYLUS Roslyn Branch volunteered at the air show on Jones Beach.
The air show is a very popular even each year where pilots on jets and helicopters perform tricks in the sky. Many people often crowd the beaches to watch. However, the beach is also the home to many species of birds. Around this time of the year is when the birds are laying eggs and hatching, so having many humans walking around can be very dangerous. Fences have been set aside to protect the major nesting areas from people. As volunteers, we acted as ‘fence control’ and kept people away from being to close to the fence. We helped alert people of the species behind the fence and kept kites. frisbees. and balls at bay. Due to the fact that today was the practice day of the air show, it had slightly less people than it usually did. Regardless, we still fulfilled our responsibilities and kept stragglers away from the bird and the nests.
Members who participated include:
Yang Amy Wu (6 hours) and Tiffany Lin (6 hours).
