On Sunday from 1:30pm to 5:00pm, the Roslyn AYLUS branch worked as TAs to assist teachers from Chinese Cultural Association of Long Island.
Today was openhouse day so the student’s parents were walking around the building, survey the works of their children. Some of the kids brought in boards that displayed collages of their homework, classwork, tests, and projects and presented it to the parents. We taught some of the younger children to greet the parents in mandarin to showcase their language skills.
As TAs, it is important for us to not only do our obligated tasks like picking up fallen objects and guiding the students through the lessons but also to boost classroom spirit. The rainy weather had made many of the students tired and not fully pay attention to the teacher. We encouraged them, demonstrated examples, told the students to speak louder, and applauded their work to get them more pumped about learning. A couple of the students actually fell asleep in class and we gently woke them up and reviewed the parts they missed.
A five year old had a fever and was crying in class and saying how cold it was. We did not panick and handled it calmly. Due to the fact that there was a substitute today, we found the principal and called their parents. We also talked to the boy about his hobbies and school to make him feel slightly better as we waited for his mom to arrive.
Because it was openhouse, cultural hour was canceled and instead replaced by a performance. We sorted out the performers in each class and sent them down early before bringing the rest of the kids down to the auditorium.
