Pearland Branch Hosted Spring Fling and Health Fest on April 15th, 2023

On April 15th, the Ed White Spring Fling and Health Fest was successfully held after several training sessions and hours of preparation over the past month. The fair was a collaborative effort that brought together volunteers from different organizations to create a fun-filled event aimed at encouraging the local Houston community to lead healthy lives.

The volunteers arrived early to set up the booths, balloon decorations, snacks, and prize tables. A team of AYLUS volunteers managed the registration station, ensuring that guests were directed to the different stations available. For the kids who attended the fair, volunteers provided entertainment and educational activities such as balloon art, origami, coloring, and face painting. Tai Chi and martial arts performances were held on stage, and small exercise activities such as hula-hooping were also available.

To educate the younger guests on healthy eating, AYLUS volunteers created posters with multiple infographics. The volunteers also prepared a fun My Plate activity where kids sorted out different felt foods into categories. There was also a poster on mental health, encouraging the kids to identify their favorite relaxing hobbies to use as an outlet for stress. After answering questions at both educational stations, the kids could spin a wheel to earn prizes.

For the adults, the Light and Salt Association set up a booth for Hepatitis B and C screening, FIT screening, and a health insurance information desk. They also provided a family doctor and pediatrician consultation and then a station for their All of Us research program. To incentivize frequent testing, a five-dollar gift card was offered to the adults who participated in a screening and the All of Us research.

After the fair, volunteers packed up and reflected on the success of the event. The health fair had a great turnout, with many kids showing up eager to learn. Not only was it a successful collaborative project, but it was also a fun-filled event that successfully encouraged the local Houston community to lead healthy lives.
