On Sunday, March 12th, 2023, from 1:30 to 5:00. A portion of the AYLUS branch Roslyn met at William A. Shine Great Neck South High School. It was attended by Hunter Chen, Ryan Lin, and Ethan Lin. On Sundays, a chinese school is set up spread and educate people of all nationality and origins about chinese culture and language. We signed up to volunteer as teacher’s assistants for different classes. Our group of 3 split up into different classes at different levels of learning. I was with the 1st and 2nd-grade kids. While Ryan was with the 4th and 5th graders. And Ethan was with the Pre-K kids.
For the next three and a half hours I assisted students with Chinese. My job was to assist them in learning, break up fights, take them to the bathroom, uphold the rules, and help the teacher with whatever she needed. We learned basic Chinese characters. Ryan and Ethan taught the more advanced students that learned longer phrases and more complex words. In the 3 and a half hours the students got 2 15-minute long breaks. And the whole time the students were very energetic and loud. They also all go to the bathroom at the same time. The students are given coupons if they show good behavior and can redeem said coupons to purchase snacks. After the three and a half hours were done. Ryan and I went to the calligraphy class. The class consisted of students of varying ages. As teacher assistants, our tasks were to set up the table for calligraphy, give students calligraphy ink, hand out calligraphy, and do whatever else the teacher asks. The whole class was quiet with concentration. Ryan and I went around refilling ink wells, cleaning up spills, and cleaning inkwells. The whole 4 and a half hours passed really quickly and with little to no difficulty.
Member who participated include:
Hunter Chen (3.5 hours), Ethan Lin (3.5 hours), and Ryan Lin (3.5 hours).
