On January 19th, 2023, Columbus Branch members and parents went to Abbey Church Village in Dublin to work with the program director to set up a weekly free tutoring programs for K-5 elementary students in their community. This community is a community for low-income families, some of which are new immigrant families. There was a tutoring program in place before the pandemic, which was paused since 2020. Through One Dublin, a non-profit organization, that the Columbus branch volunteered before, Abbey Church Village reached out to Columbus, seeking our help. 3 members, branch leaders, Brenna Li and Evan Yu, and enthusiastic member, Ayden He, together with two parents, went to discuss the program with the representative of community, communicated questions and answers, and decided on the schedule (Every Wednesday and Thursday afternoon) and format of the tutoring program (Homework help and assigned tutor/student pair). The members also met a group of elementary kids in the community, who looked forward to the start of the program.
The volunteers hope to officially start the tutoring sessions in February.
