On Sunday from 1:30 pm – 5:00 pm, the Roslyn AYLUS branch helped out at a school of Chinese Cultural Association of Long Island.
With Halloween hours away, we had a fun filled day helping out costumed kids at the school. After guiding sugar-crazed kiddos through ‘trick-or-treat’ in the courtyard. Everyone was in high spirits as the children went through their vocabulary and we worked to correct their pronunciation and improve their reading skills. After handing out papers and making frequent trips to the printer, class time ended with a game of bingo. As simple as it may seem, handling little kids isn’t easy. Papercuts weren’t infrequent and while lining up to exchange coupons for snacks, you have to mindful of those standing next to the stairs.
During the hour of Cultural Activities, we were assigned different posts. Some of us guided traditional dance and worked to correct the movements while others broke up fights in martial arts class. Others helping with calligraphy class had to prevent ink splashing everywhere, wash bowls of ink, and wipe down tables. In arts-n-crafts, we made paper ghosts to celebrate the Halloween spirit.
